York: The Vibrant and Sustainable High Streets Fund has launched. It’s part of a £27 million initiative to help local businesses and communities. This fund is the first of four programs aimed at revitalizing town centers and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Mr. Skaith announced the fund today, emphasizing the importance of town centers. He noted that they face challenges from lockdowns, online shopping, and large retail parks. The goal is to create lively, mixed-use areas that attract visitors.
For the first phase, the fund invites grant applications from creative partnerships. They want fresh ideas to enhance community spaces and activities that draw people in. Mr. Skaith, a business owner in York, understands these challenges firsthand.
Grant applications open on February 3. This fund is part of a broader Mayoral Challenge Fund, which includes other initiatives launching soon. The Carbon Negative Challenge Fund will support projects aimed at reducing emissions.
Additionally, the Skills Innovation Fund will help develop skills in the region. It addresses issues like declining adult learning and tutor recruitment. A fourth fund, the Business Innovation Fund, will launch in March to boost economic opportunities.
