The judge, Tania D’Amelio, pointed out that TikTok dropped the ball by not doing enough to stop these dangerous challenges from spreading. They’ve got eight days to cough up the cash or face some serious consequences. Plus, they need to set up an office in Venezuela.
The money from the fine is going to be used to create a fund for the victims of these challenges. It’s aimed at helping those affected, especially kids. TikTok said they get how serious this is, but it’s a tough spot for everyone involved.
Authorities reported that not only did three teens die, but around 200 others got sick after trying out these challenges in schools. TikTok has built its fame on these challenges, but now it’s facing backlash for the risks they pose.
The app has rules against promoting self-harm, but that hasn’t stopped some dangerous content from slipping through. Back in November, President Maduro warned TikTok to clean up its act or face severe measures.
Now, lawmakers are even looking into new regulations for social media, especially after Maduro’s controversial reelection. He’s been vocal about how these platforms can spread hate and division, even calling out Elon Musk for supposedly targeting Venezuela. It’s a wild situation, and it’s clear that the conversation around social media safety is just heating up.
