Topeka: Starting December 26, veterans using the Department of Veterans Affairs’ online services will have more secure options to access their health and benefits info. From January 31, they’ll need to log in using either Login.gov or ID.me.

This change affects those accessing records on My HealtheVet, VA.gov, or the VA mobile app. The new system will allow for multifactor authentication, making it easier for veterans to verify their identity securely.

Brian Stephens, the Communications Chief for the VA Eastern Kansas Healthcare System, emphasized how important this change is for veterans. He wants to ensure that no one is left frustrated on February 1 because they can’t log in.

Veterans who don’t switch by the deadline might lose access to online services like secure messaging, prescription refills, and appointment scheduling. But don’t worry, nothing will be erased; they just won’t be able to access it.

Stephens mentioned that while the transition might be tricky for some, the VA has resources available to help. Veterans can visit the hospital for live assistance or check out online guides and videos at www.va.gov/sign-in-changes.

For those who prefer talking to someone, they can call the MyVA411 help line at 1-800-698-2411. And of course, visiting a local VA facility is always an option.

Stephens pointed out that this change is all about security. Veterans are a vulnerable group, and the new login methods will help protect their health and benefits information.

If veterans don’t set up their multifactor authentication accounts, they’ll need to contact local VA facilities, which could lead to delays in managing their services.

The VA’s press release highlighted the differences between Login.gov and ID.me. Login.gov is user-friendly and great for those who already use federal services. On the other hand, ID.me offers more robust identity verification options, perfect for veterans looking for military discounts or needing extra verification methods.
