US Consul General Kathryn Porter Visits East Lothian for Cultural Exchange

During her visit, she checked out several key spots. These included John Muir’s Birthplace Museum, the Scottish Flag Heritage Centre, and Glenkinchie Distillery. She also visited the Edinburgh Innovation Hub at Queen Margaret University.
At each location, she met with staff and local business leaders. They discussed their work and connections with the USA. Ms. Porter expressed her admiration for East Lothian’s cultural heritage and innovative spirit.
She noted the strong ties between the communities. Ms. Porter looks forward to building even greater connections that benefit both the USA and East Lothian.
Provost McMillan highlighted East Lothian’s historic links with the US. He mentioned John Muir’s role in establishing National Parks in the US. He also noted that 25% of overseas visitors to East Lothian come from the US.
The visit to John Muir’s Birthplace Museum focused on future exhibitions about climate challenges. The aim is to inspire people to take action, just like Muir did.
At the Flag Heritage Centre, the Stars and Stripes were raised to welcome Ms. Porter. Dave Williamson, chairman of the Scottish Flag Trust, mentioned their close ties with St Andrew’s Societies in North America.
Ms. Porter also toured Glenkinchie Distillery, learning about whisky-making in the region. The tour wrapped up at the Edinburgh Innovation Hub, a £40 million project supporting innovative businesses.
During her visit, Ms. Porter met with East Lothian Council’s chief executive, Monica Patterson. They discussed cultural, tourism, and economic opportunities between East Lothian and the USA.
Ms. Patterson expressed delight in welcoming Ms. Porter. She emphasized the importance of cultural and economic connections with the US. This visit opens doors for future collaboration and strengthens their commitment to a thriving economy.
Mr. McMillan added that they look forward to continuing discussions from this visit. They aim to explore new opportunities that benefit local communities and international partners.
