Augusta: A tragic shooting at Fort Eisenhower has left one person dead. It all went down early Saturday morning, and the base went into lockdown around 7:45 a.m.
Within a couple of hours, officials gave the “all clear” signal, and they managed to catch the shooter. Thankfully, they said it was an isolated incident, so there’s no ongoing threat to the community.
Army officials are focusing on supporting the victim’s family and anyone else affected by this sad event. They’re working with local and state authorities to investigate what happened.
Right now, they haven’t released the names of the suspect or the victim. They’re waiting to notify the family first before sharing any details. Another update is expected on Monday.
In a Facebook post, an army spokesperson mentioned that Fort Eisenhower is providing support to the victim’s family and assistance for those impacted by this tragedy.
During the lockdown, officials urged everyone on the base to follow lockdown procedures and take action if they felt unsafe. It was a tense situation for a bit.
They even had to cancel some activities, including an Army-Navy football game that was supposed to happen outside Washington, D.C.
This shooting comes just days after a soldier at Fort Liberty in North Carolina was taken into custody after a separate incident. That situation sparked rumors of an active shooter, but officials later confirmed it wasn’t the case.
Col. Mary Ricks from the 18th Airborne Corps said emergency services were on the scene quickly, and by 4 p.m., everything was under control with no injuries reported.
While shootings on military bases are rare, they have happened before. Between 1994 and 2019, there were at least 24 shootings at military installations, according to NBC News.
