Glasgow: A community in the West End is really struggling with missed bin collections. Residents at Bishopsmill Court in Yorkhill are at their wits’ end.
They’ve even had to hire private rat exterminators and buy their own bins because the council just won’t collect theirs. It’s been a long battle, and folks are thinking about paying for private collections after nearly ten years of this mess.
One resident shared how they had to fight hard just to get a collection in December. Their bins sat for two months, even though they live close to the Western Bin Depot. It’s been going on since 2017, and no one seems to know why.
They mentioned going up to six weeks without a collection. When they talked to the managers at the depot, they were told they couldn’t make the workers collect the bins. It’s baffling!
Another resident said the situation got so bad that management had to escort a bin lorry onto the property to ensure the bins were collected. But as soon as the escort stopped, so did the collections.
It’s frustrating when you can see the bin lorries leaving the depot and your own bins are overflowing. One day, they even saw the student flats next door getting their bins collected and asked if they could do theirs too. Turns out, those students pay for private collection, which just adds to the irritation.
Now, the residents are seriously considering private waste collection. They’re even thinking about taking Glasgow City Council to small claims court if this keeps up. It’s either that or let the rats take over!
They’ve had to deal with up to 40 rat nests around their bins. It’s gotten so bad that the rats are starting to invade people’s homes. Every time they step outside, they see them because there’s always food around.
With the rubbish piling up, it’s just a matter of time before more problems arise. On windy days, trash blows into the River Kelvin, and it’s embarrassing for a historic building like theirs.
They’ve raised the issue with local politicians and the council, but after eight years of similar promises, they’re not holding their breath for a solution.
Glasgow City Council was contacted for a comment, but it’s clear the residents are fed up and refuse to live in filth any longer.
