Update on Swansea potentially hosting e-scooters trial

Swansea: A meeting revealed that many hurdles must be cleared for an e-scooter trial. Swansea Council is interested in working with the Department for Transport on this.

E-scooters are illegal on UK roads unless part of a trial. Rental schemes have been running in England since 2020, but Wales hasn’t had one yet. Cllr Andrew Stevens explained that showing interest doesn’t guarantee a trial in Swansea, but it allows for further examination.

Cllr Stevens mentioned that new legislation would be needed. He also said discussions with councillors and community groups would follow. Only after these discussions would they consider moving forward.

Cllr Peter Black, one of the councillors who questioned the trial, suggested withdrawing their interest. He expressed concerns about e-scooters being a danger. He shared a personal experience of nearly tripping over one left on a walkway.

Cllr Stevens promised to arrange a session for councillors to discuss e-scooters, e-bikes, and their potential benefits. Cardiff Council is also interested in hosting a trial.

Supporters argue that e-scooters are low-emission and affordable. However, critics worry about speed limits and illegal pavement riding. In trial areas, riders can use roads and cycle lanes but not pavements.

A Welsh Government spokesman stated that introducing a trial in Wales would depend on the UK Government. They are open to discussions with local authorities about necessary legislative changes.
