Streaky Bay: The search for 28-year-old surfer Lance Appleby has wrapped up after four long days. Sadly, they didn’t find him.
South Australia Police announced on Sunday that the search efforts have officially ended. They had been looking for Lance off the coast of Streaky Bay, where he was last seen.
According to the police, they had a big team out there, including locals and even the Mayor, but despite their hard work, they couldn’t locate his body.
This all started after locals saw him being attacked by a shark on Thursday night while he was surfing near Granites Beach. It’s just heartbreaking.
Lance was back in the Eyre Peninsula for a family visit over Christmas. He had moved to the Gold Coast earlier this year for work.
His surfboard was found later, and it had a bite mark on it, which is just chilling. A family friend shared that in his last moments, Lance was just catching a wave and then, out of nowhere, he was attacked.
His workplace, Allconstruct Interiors, paid tribute to him, saying he was a great young talent and a beloved part of their team.
Lance’s brother Kenneth expressed the family’s deep sorrow, saying they’re going through “impossible pain” after losing him to a Great White Shark.
He remembered Lance as a caring and adventurous brother who always had a smile on his face. It’s just so tragic.
Granites Beach has been closed to the public since the incident, and people are being asked to stay away from the area for safety.
Experts say this stretch of coastline is known for shark activity, as the waters change depth quickly, making it a hotspot for these creatures.
