Sydney: A wild chase unfolded recently when police were called about a man trying to break into a home in Edensor Park. This happened around 1:30 AM on New Year’s Eve.
When officers arrived, they learned that two people, possibly armed, had jumped into a Hyundai and sped off. They spotted the car later on Cowpasture Rd in Hinchinbrook and tried to pull it over.
But the Hyundai didn’t stop, leading to a pursuit. However, they had to call it off quickly for safety reasons. During this chase, shots were reportedly fired from inside the car, hitting the police vehicle’s bonnet. Thankfully, no officers were hurt.
The chase ended when the Hyundai crashed on St Andrews Rd in Varroville after police laid down road spikes. A search of the car turned up two pistols, an assault rifle, and some spent cartridges.
While the passenger managed to escape, police arrested a 20-year-old man at Brisbane Airport a few days later, thanks to help from federal and state police.
This driver, Faez Finau, is facing multiple charges, including break and enter and weapons offenses. He’s currently in custody and didn’t apply for bail, with his next court appearance set for February 26.
It seems both Finau and the homeowner have ties to organized crime, which has raised some eyebrows. NSW Police deputy commissioner Peter Thurtell mentioned that at least two shots hit the police car, but luckily, everyone involved came out unscathed.
Thurtell emphasized how dangerous the situation was, putting the lives of officers at risk. It’s a serious reminder of the risks they face every day.
