The TUC, a trade union organization, reached out to these retailers, urging them to reconsider their hiring practices. They pointed out that many workers were missing out on essential employment rights. Some retailers had been using these apps to find temporary staff for the busy holiday season, which raised eyebrows.
Kate Bell, a leader at the TUC, wrote to the CEOs of these companies, stressing the need for fair treatment of all workers. She highlighted that many of these gig workers were classified as self-employed, which put them at risk of losing out on benefits like minimum wage and sick pay.
Uniqlo mentioned that they only used the Temper app for a short time and have now stopped. They want to ensure that all their employees get the benefits they deserve. Lush also stated that they had only hired a few people through these apps and have no plans to do so again. Gymshark, while not commenting directly, is also believed to have stopped using these platforms for hiring.
