This park is at the busy intersection of Avondale Road and St Lesmo Road. It’s supposed to be a Local Area of Play, but there’s hardly anything for kids. Just a patch of astroturf with some faded hopscotch markings.
The area is surrounded by tall trees and has signs saying “No ball games.” One gate is even locked, and there are warnings against dogs. Yet, dog owners still let their pets roam freely.
Stockport Council removed play equipment due to concerns about anti-social behavior. But locals say the space is now just for dogs. One mother, Viji, said it’s too small for kids and questioned its purpose.
Another resident noted that their kids rarely use the park. They mentioned that it’s mostly for dog walkers now. The park was created about 15 years ago when new homes were built nearby.
A long-time resident said it’s become a dog park. She rarely sees kids there. A neighbor added that it feels like a box-ticking exercise by the council.
Ward councillor Matt Wynne mentioned the lack of funds for improvements in the area. He believes more flexibility is needed for public spaces.
Stockport Council is open to feedback from the community. They acknowledge the importance of local green spaces and are willing to listen to residents’ ideas for better use of the park.
