London: Aldi has snagged the title of the cheapest supermarket in the UK for 2024. Their average grocery basket costs just £100.29, which is pretty impressive.
Shoppers at Aldi saved around £393 over the year compared to those shopping at Waitrose, which is the priciest option out there. That’s a lot of cash!
Lidl came in a close second, with a similar basket costing £101.48. If you’re using their loyalty scheme, it’s a bit cheaper, but still more than Aldi.
Waitrose, on the other hand, had the same items priced at £129.83. That’s nearly £30 more than Aldi! It’s clear where the savings are.
Harry Rose, the editor of Which? magazine, mentioned that many families are looking to save after the holiday spending. Switching supermarkets can really help with that.
The study looked at 56 grocery items, including both branded and store brands. They even factored in special offers, but not multi-buys.
Interestingly, Asda was the cheapest for a larger trolley of 158 items, but only for part of the year. Tesco’s Clubcard prices made it cheaper in some months.
Waitrose consistently ranked as the most expensive for larger shops, with an average December bill hitting £458.12. Ouch!
