Crewe: So, it looks like Britain’s busiest railway line is in for a rough ride. They’re planning some major upgrades that will cause a lot of disruption over the next decade. Can you believe it?
Starting in 2026, they’re going to tackle 150 miles of the West Coast Main Line, and it’s going to cost a whopping £3.8 billion. That’s a serious chunk of change!
During this time, parts of the line will be closed for weeks each year. The stations that will feel the pinch include Warrington Bank Quay, Wigan, Preston, Lancaster, Oxenholme, Penrith, and Carlisle. It’s going to be a hassle for a lot of folks.
Apparently, there will be three separate two-week closures each year from 2026 to 2028. A source mentioned that this level of disruption hasn’t been seen in 25 years. Yikes!
There’s a lot of planning going on, but it’s still early days. They’re saying this is a major project to make sure the line is ready for the future.
Avanti West Coast, the company running trains between London and Scotland, isn’t sure how this will affect their schedules yet. They’re in the dark, just like the rest of us.
The work is more about renewing the line than enhancing it. They’ll be replacing 155 miles of overhead wiring, upgrading 2,000 signals, and swapping out 140 miles of track. It’s a big job!
Stuart Patrick from the Glasgow Chamber of Commerce pointed out that this shows how poorly we invest in infrastructure. It’s a shame we’ve let things get so old that they need replacing after 50 years.
He also mentioned that HS2 was supposed to be the long-term fix for the congestion on the West Coast Main Line, but with the former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak scrapping it between Birmingham and Manchester, it’s hard to see how we’ll shift from planes to trains.
In the meantime, if you’re traveling, bus replacement services are expected, but there’s concern that people might just book flights instead. Not great news for train travel!
On a brighter note, over two million train tickets are being discounted this month. So, if you’re planning a trip, you might snag a deal!
From January 14 to 20, you can grab cheaper Advance and Off-Peak tickets for travel across Britain until the end of March. Just keep in mind, not all train operators are joining in on the sale.
Last year, a similar promotion saved passengers around £5.8 million, which is pretty impressive. The Department for Transport is hoping for similar success this time around.
We’ve reached out to Network Rail for their take on all this, so stay tuned!
