Belfast: The SDLP’s Leader of the Opposition, Matthew O’Toole, spoke out. He said the public expects more from their MLAs than just showing up. This comes as the Northern Ireland Assembly marks its first anniversary.
The Assembly returned on February 3, 2024. O’Toole reflected on the achievements and shortcomings of the Executive parties over the past year.
When he became Leader of the Opposition, he aimed for a constructive approach. However, he stressed that being constructive doesn’t mean ignoring failures in delivery.
O’Toole noted that while they’ve been constructive, they won’t excuse the Executive for not delivering results. He believes accountability is crucial.
He praised the positive tone between the First and deputy First Ministers. However, he pointed out that overall progress has been limited.
O’Toole acknowledged some improvements in childcare but said it’s hard to see significant progress in other areas, especially health.
He highlighted ongoing issues in the health service, like increasing waiting lists and a lack of clear plans to address these problems.
O’Toole criticized the Executive for not having a solid plan for health services. He believes the public expected a clear strategy by now.
He also expressed frustration over vague statements from ministers and the absence of specific targets in the draft Programme for Government.
O’Toole mentioned that the draft took too long to produce and lacked clarity. He compared it unfavorably to the quicker, clearer plans from the south.
He believes the public deserves a straightforward list of priorities from the Executive, especially with the next election approaching.
Reflecting on Assembly business, he said too many non-binding motions are trivializing important topics. He wants more focus on actionable issues.
O’Toole pointed out that while some topics are important, they shouldn’t take up significant time in the Assembly.
He noted that the First Minister recently highlighted a motion on special educational services. However, he stressed that it was non-binding and didn’t lead to real change.
O’Toole believes the Executive has a chance to rebuild trust in politics. But he insists that just showing up isn’t enough.
He compared it to employees discussing their achievements with their bosses. Simply being present isn’t a valid accomplishment.
He reiterated that the public expects more than just attendance. They want decisions made on pressing issues like health and infrastructure.
O’Toole emphasized that the SDLP has not only opposed but also proposed alternative policies. They want the Executive to take decisive action.
He believes the public appreciates their constructive opposition and accountability efforts over the past year.
O’Toole called for an end to politics as usual. He wants the Executive to focus on real issues and deliver clear plans for public services.
He concluded that the SDLP will continue to hold the Executive accountable for the public’s sake.
