Dhaka: So, Tulip Siddiq has decided to resign as a government minister. This comes amid some serious corruption investigations happening back in Bangladesh.
She handed in her resignation to Keir Starmer, saying her role was becoming a distraction. It’s a big deal since she’s the second minister to step down in just six months.
Her resignation followed reports that authorities in Bangladesh filed a criminal case against her. They’re accusing her of misusing her position to gain influence and illegally acquire land with her aunt, who happens to be the former prime minister, Sheikh Hasina.
It’s pretty wild because she’s been named in two corruption probes linked to her aunt’s government. The anti-corruption commission in Bangladesh is really digging into this, and they’ve even filed a case against Sheikh Hasina and her family for a large-scale land grab.
The ACC director mentioned that Hasina, along with some officials, allocated plots for herself and her family. They’ve got documents and evidence to back this up.
According to reports, Siddiq was aware of a deal that gave large plots of land in Dhaka to her family. It’s alleged that she used her influence to get similar land allocations for her own family members.
And it doesn’t stop there. There’s also a separate investigation into embezzlement related to a nuclear deal involving her aunt, where Siddiq’s name has popped up again.
Now, the Treasury minister is under scrutiny by a standards watchdog after it was revealed she lived in properties in London linked to allies of the former prime minister.
She even referred herself for an investigation, insisting she hasn’t done anything wrong. But the pressure is on, especially after Labour Party materials were found in the ransacked residence of her aunt in Dhaka.
That place had some pretty luxurious items, like Chanel bags and a diamond certificate. It’s no wonder there are calls for Starmer to let her go, with the Conservative leader saying it’s time for action.
So, this story is still developing, and it’ll be interesting to see what happens next.
