Scotland: Over 4,000 overweight kids have been referred for help since 2020. Some are as young as two years old. This is a growing concern for many.

These kids receive support from dieticians, psychologists, and health coaches. They help families make healthier lifestyle choices together.

Campaigners say the Scottish Government isn’t doing enough to tackle obesity. They feel the government has failed to keep its promises on this issue.

Tam Fry from the National Obesity Forum says Scotland hasn’t addressed obesity prevention properly. He believes more attention is needed for preschool children.

Data shows that at least 4,307 children have been referred to weight management programs. Some health boards report rising referral rates.

NHS Ayrshire and Arran refers kids as young as two for weight management. NHS Lothian also considers referrals for children under two after a check-up.

A report highlights the serious effects of childhood obesity, like mental health issues and health risks. These include high blood pressure and joint problems.

Poverty and social inequalities contribute to rising childhood obesity rates. Nearly 30% of kids in Scotland are overweight or obese, making it hard to meet the SNP’s 2030 target.

Mr. Fry notes that no obesity targets have been met in 30 years. He calls for a real strategy to help families prevent obesity.

Scottish Conservative Brian Whittle says it’s alarming that two-year-olds need weight management services. He urges the government to take more action.

Public Health Minister Jenni Minto states they support initiatives to improve children’s health. This includes programs for healthier food access in deprived areas.
