Truro: So, the police in Cornwall recently got a lot of attention for taking an electric scooter from a teenager. They posted about it on social media, and let’s just say, people had a lot to say.
They shared that a 16-year-old was caught riding the scooter in the city center, and they were planning to destroy it. The police reminded everyone that riding these scooters on public land is illegal and can lead to hefty fines.
But not everyone was on board with this decision. Some folks on Facebook were pretty sarcastic, saying things like, “The other criminals were having a day off.” Others joked about the officer riding the scooter around while drinking a Monster drink.
One comment even said, “I’m so glad you caught them! Imagine the fun they could’ve endured had you not intervened?” It was clear that many thought the police had better things to do.
Some comments were more serious, pointing out that the police had ruined a kid’s Christmas present. Others felt that taking away a child’s toy didn’t really make anyone safer.
According to the law, e-scooters are treated like motor vehicles, which means you need a license and insurance to ride them. It’s illegal to use your own e-scooter on public land, and the consequences can be pretty steep.
While some parts of the UK are trying out e-scooter rentals, neither Devon nor Cornwall is included in those trials. So, for now, it looks like the rules are pretty strict around here.
