London: Brexit Britain might dodge Donald Trump’s trade war. He hinted a deal could happen between the UK and the US.
Trump is planning to impose tough tariffs on the EU. But he suggested the UK might be spared from these tariffs.
When asked about targeting the UK, Trump said, “UK is out of line, but I think that can be worked out.” His comments raised hopes that Brexit could help the UK avoid tariffs.
UK ministers believe they can escape tariffs since the US doesn’t have a trade deficit with Britain. Trump mentioned that talks with Sir Keir Starmer have been positive.
He said, “We’ve had a couple of meetings and numerous phone calls. We’re getting along very well.” Meanwhile, the EU warned it would retaliate against any “hurtful” tariffs.
Trump recently announced a 25% levy on goods from Mexico and Canada, and a 10% tax on Chinese goods. He believes his trade war will lead to a “golden age of America.”
Canada and Mexico plan to respond with their own levies, while China is considering legal action against the US. Trump said EU tariffs would come soon but didn’t specify a timeline.
The UK Prime Minister downplayed fears of a trade war, stating, “It is early days. I want strong trading relations.” He emphasized that discussions with Trump focused on this strong relationship.
Today, the Prime Minister will meet EU leaders in Brussels. He aims to increase pressure on Vladimir Putin and align sanctions with the US.
However, Trump’s comments may overshadow his visit. Sir Keir Starmer stated he is working with European partners to target energy revenues and companies supporting Putin’s military efforts.
