He took to social media to say the UK should “get rid of windmills” and open up the North Sea. This comes after the Labour government decided to raise taxes on oil and gas companies while supporting new wind energy projects.
Tessa Khan, who leads a group focused on transitioning away from fossil fuels, called out Trump for looking out for U.S. oil interests. She pointed out that his team is filled with folks from the oil and gas sector who want to keep the world hooked on fossil fuels.
It’s not entirely clear what triggered Trump’s comments, but they seem linked to Apache, a U.S. oil company, which recently announced it would be leaving the North Sea due to the UK’s windfall tax. The CEO of Apache’s parent company said the tax and new regulations made their operations in the UK unprofitable.
This isn’t the first time oil companies have pulled out since the Labour party took charge, promising to end new oil and gas licenses. Other companies like Exxon have also exited the North Sea recently.
Khan emphasized that the UK should focus on its wind power potential, which could provide energy security and create jobs. She believes that attacks on the UK’s clean energy goals won’t change the fact that the country has mostly used up its gas and exports much of its remaining oil.
The government hasn’t commented yet, but it’s clear this debate is heating up.
