Tricky Travel as Snow and Freezing Rain Hit Eastern Prairies

Regina: So, it looks like the Prairies are in for a rough ride this weekend. A warm-up is on the way, but it’s bringing along some freezing rain and snow that could make travel pretty tricky.
Freezing rain can really mess up the roads, especially when it’s layered on top of fresh snow. If you’re heading out on Sunday or Monday, just be extra careful. Slippery roads are no joke!
There are freezing rain warnings for parts of southeastern Saskatchewan and western Manitoba. Highways and sidewalks could turn into ice rinks, so watch your step.
And hey, if you’re driving, slow down! The weather’s not going to be friendly, and you might face some delays. Plus, ice can break tree branches, which is another hazard to keep in mind.
Before you hit the road, make sure your car is ready. Check the road conditions, fill up your gas tank, and clear off any snow. Winter tires are a must!
Also, plan your trip wisely. Stick to main roads, let someone know your route, and avoid the rush if you can.
As for Sunday, the freezing rain will start in southeastern Saskatchewan, hitting places like Regina and Weyburn. Expect about 3-5 hours of that icy stuff before it transitions to snow later in the day.
Northwestern Ontario will also see some freezing drizzle before it turns into snow overnight. So, be prepared for slippery conditions everywhere.
By Sunday afternoon, snow will start to blanket eastern Saskatchewan and then move into southern Manitoba, including Winnipeg, which could see 5-10 cm of snow.
On Monday morning, the snow will still be hanging around in parts of eastern Manitoba and will continue to spread into northwestern Ontario.
Southern Manitoba might also experience some strong winds, which could make visibility a challenge along with the falling snow.
Looking ahead, temperatures are set to drop significantly after this system passes, with highs around -20°C by Wednesday. But don’t worry, there’s a brief warm-up coming before another cold snap hits just in time for the weekend.
