Bristol: Councillors have come together to remember Jeff Lovell, who was fondly known as the “king of Knowle West.” He passed away last November at the age of 72. Jeff was a former lord mayor and a dedicated firefighter, serving the community for many years.

He started his firefighting career at Bedminster Fire Station back in 1974 and worked his way up in the Avon Fire Brigade for over thirty years. After retiring in 2005, he continued to serve as a councillor on the Avon Fire Authority.

Jeff was first elected as a councillor in 2007 and even held the position of cabinet member for social care. He stepped down in 2021. His family attended a full council meeting on January 14, where heartfelt tributes were shared.

Green Councillor Tony Dyer spoke highly of Jeff, saying he was a fantastic guy who truly cared about his community. He mentioned how Jeff was approachable and well-loved, with no one having a bad word to say about him.

Jeff wasn’t your typical politician; he focused on serving the community rather than getting caught up in party politics. His encouragement helped many, including Dyer, who felt nervous entering the council as a working-class kid.

Jeff’s impact was profound, and he was remembered as a genuinely nice guy. He experienced significant events in his career, like the IRA bombing of Park Street, which he described as a real eye-opener for a young firefighter.

His funeral on December 17 was a testament to his legacy, with many attending to pay their respects. Labour Cllr Paul Goggin shared that Jeff was immensely proud of his career and his role as lord mayor, even being buried in his robes.

Jeff loved many things, from his family to his fishing, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His contributions to Bristol and its community will not be forgotten.
