Sydney: Alex Brown and his partner Madeline Velk are all about the outdoors and their beloved border collie, Mick. When they planned a year-long caravan trip around Australia, they debated whether to bring Mick along.
At 11 years old, Mick is a chill dog, but he has hip dysplasia, which made them think twice. “We were 50-50 about taking him,” Alex said, mainly due to Mick’s age and health.
In the end, they couldn’t leave him behind. So, off they went from Sydney last January with their caravan and 4WD. They packed Mick’s meds and hit the road. Surprisingly, the trip turned out to be easier than they thought.
“Now that we’ve done it, I wouldn’t hesitate to take him again,” Alex shared. Sure, there were some challenges visiting national parks, but the memories they made with Mick were worth it.
Madeline mentioned they had to skip a few spots where dogs weren’t allowed, but there were plenty of other places to explore. They also made friends with other dog owners, swapping care for their pets while visiting parks.
Mick even had some fun moments, like herding a crab on a sandbar and swimming with dolphins. With the right meds and some vet advice, he managed the trip like a champ.
They found Western and South Australia to be super dog-friendly, especially the beaches in Exmouth. When they considered leaving Mick with family to visit Fraser Island, they decided against it. “He’s done the whole trip; we’re not parting with him now,” Madeline said.
As they wrap up their adventure, Alex and Madeline are already planning their next trip. They encourage others to take their dogs along, saying it’s easier than you’d think. They hope Australia becomes even more pet-friendly, especially in national parks.
Alex believes there should be more flexibility for well-behaved dogs in parks. “I’d rather deal with a quiet dog than a noisy kid,” he joked. They’re all about making travel with pets a smoother experience.
