Teignmouth: So, there are plans for 81 new homes in Teignmouth, and it’s stirring up quite a bit of chatter. The idea is to build affordable housing on some land north of New Road.
The Guinness Partnership is behind this project, aiming to tackle the housing shortage. They’re looking at one-bedroom places, plus some open space and a play area for kids.
But not everyone is on board. Some folks are worried that Teignmouth just can’t handle more homes. Roads are already packed, and schools and health services are feeling the strain.
The application is in with Teignbridge Council, and it includes a mix of one, two, and three-bedroom homes, like flats and houses. The Guinness team says that building new homes is a big deal, both locally and nationally.
They point out that there’s a real need for housing in Devon, and this site is already marked for development in the local plan from 2014.
While the original plan was for 50 homes, Guinness believes they can fit more on the 2.5-hectare site. They’re pushing for a 100% affordable housing scheme, which they say will help meet the local demand.
The proposed homes will include a mix of 21 one-bedroom, 26 two-bedroom, 30 three-bedroom, and four four-bedroom units. They plan to have a mix of social rent and shared ownership options.
Guinness is focusing on smaller homes to meet the needs identified by the local council. They want to ensure that if they can’t develop the site, at least 25% of the homes will still be affordable.
However, there are already some objections. People are worried about the roads and whether local schools and health services can handle more residents.
