London: Drivers in London should expect traffic delays this weekend due to the Blackwall Tunnel closing. This closure will affect many roads and crossings around the city, leading to congestion for both drivers and bus passengers.
Traffic jams are common in central London, especially during weekends. To avoid the worst of it, consider using a bike or the Underground, but be aware that some Tube lines will also be closed this weekend.
Transport for London (TfL) has announced that the Blackwall Tunnel will be closed at times from Friday to Monday. This closure will likely cause delays at other River Thames crossings, making travel more difficult.
The Blackwall Tunnel connects Poplar and North Greenwich. During the closure, only the northbound tunnel will be open. It will be closed southbound on Friday night and again late Saturday night until early Monday morning.
TfL warns that other roads will also be busier than usual. Drivers should prepare for long delays, especially on the A13 between Canning Town and Whitechapel. Alternative crossings, like Tower Bridge and Rotherhithe Tunnel, are expected to be crowded.
TfL advises using public transport whenever possible. If you must drive, consider routes that avoid central London. They are working with map apps to alert drivers about the closure.
Bus route 108, which usually goes through the tunnel, will be split into two parts this weekend. Passengers can transfer to the Jubilee line to complete their journey without extra charges.
The Blackwall Tunnel is closing for work related to the new Silvertown Tunnel, which aims to ease traffic in the area. This new tunnel is set to open in 2025 and will have tolls for drivers.
TfL has conducted emergency drills in the tunnel to ensure safety. The Blackwall Tunnel, opened in 1987, has a reputation for ghost sightings, adding to its unique history.
