Ben was working on an irrigation project when he noticed the snake swimming around, and he couldn’t believe his eyes. He shared the footage, saying it was amazing to watch. The snake was really taking advantage of the situation, and Ben joked that it was “doing us a favour.”
The carp are an invasive species, causing all sorts of trouble in the Murray-Darling Basin. So, seeing a snake take care of them was a bit of a win for everyone. Ben went back the next day, and the puddle was dry, with just a couple of tadpoles left.
Troy Hovenden, a snake catcher, also got a kick out of the footage. He mentioned that it’s rare to see snakes actively hunting like that. Usually, they go for birds or possums, but this snake was all about those fish.
Carp are a big problem in Australia, messing with native fish and stirring up the water. In some states, it’s illegal to even have them. There’s talk about using a herpes virus to help control their numbers, but that’s still in the works.
So, while the snake was doing its thing, it’s a reminder of how nature can help balance things out, even in the midst of invasive species. Pretty fascinating stuff!
