Byron Bay: Recently, a day at the beach took a wild turn for some sunbathers. As folks were soaking up the sun, a couple, Jesse and Cami, spotted what looked like an eastern brown snake slithering across towels. Talk about a surprise guest!
They quickly shared the moment with Yahoo News Australia, explaining how the snake just casually made its way across the beach. Lifeguards were alerted, and a snake catcher was called in to handle the situation safely.
Now, eastern brown snakes are no joke. They’re known to be the most common cause of fatal snake bites in Australia. Thankfully, bites are pretty rare, but still, it’s a good reminder to keep an eye out.
One local even joked, “Welcome to Australia,” after seeing the footage. Another chimed in, saying these snakes seem to love hanging out at the beach, often spotted in the dunes.
Interestingly, a similar scene happened last month in Perth, where beachgoers saw a western brown snake making its way along North Beach. Snake catcher Mathew Hampton mentioned that these snakes can navigate beaches without a hitch, but they usually stay hidden near the trees.
In Australia, around 3,000 snake bites are reported each year, with a significant portion from brown snakes. While fatalities are low, it’s mostly due to these sneaky snakes. They’re around beachgoers all the time but often go unnoticed.
