Timber Fence Around East Lothian Woodland Deemed ‘Harmfully Intrusive’
A woodland owner in East Lothian challenges a planning refusal for a timber fence

East Lothian: So, there’s this woodland owner who’s pretty upset. He wanted to put up a timber fence around his property, but the planners said no way. They think it would be too much of an eyesore for the neighborhood.
He was trying to replace an old wire fence with a six-foot timber one. But the planners said it would be a “harmfully imposing feature” right at the entrance of the community. That’s a bit harsh, don’t you think?
Now, the owner’s agents are appealing the decision. They argue that it’s not fair to call the fence intrusive when there’s a tall stone wall just across the road. They also say the planners are wrong about the fence harming any trees.
According to them, the fence is actually meant to protect the woodland. It’s important because it shields his property from the nearby waste and recycling center, plus a busy road where lorries zoom by.
They’re also pointing out that the planners didn’t provide any solid evidence that the fence would damage trees. It seems like they’re just sharing their opinions without backing them up.
Planners had said the fence would be too prominent and ruin the look of the area. They think it would stand out too much and take away from the woodland’s charm.
The appeal is set to be heard by the council’s Local Review Body later this month. It’ll be interesting to see how this all plays out!
