Sulaymaniyah: So, three guys got nabbed in Iraq for allegedly being part of a people smuggling ring that moves migrants to the UK and Europe. They’re said to be connected to a notorious smuggler who got a hefty prison sentence last year.
These men were reportedly playing different roles in the operation—one was a coordinator, another handled the money, and the last one was a middle-man. They were caught between January 8 and 12, thanks to a joint effort by the National Crime Agency and local security forces.
It’s pretty wild because this is the first time the NCA has teamed up with local security in the Kurdistan Region to tackle these high-profile smugglers. The authorities are taking this seriously, and all three men are now facing human trafficking charges.
Home Secretary Yvette Cooper even chimed in, saying this operation could really shake up the criminal networks that are trafficking people across Europe. It’s a big deal!
One of the guys they’re linked to, Amanj Hasan Zada, was caught running a smuggling business and even bragged about it on social media. He was convicted after a trial and is now serving time.
There’s even a video floating around where he’s partying and being celebrated as “the best smuggler.” It’s a bit shocking to see how brazen these operations can be.
One of the arrested men is accused of coordinating yacht movements to get migrants into Greece or Italy. Each boat was packed with people, and then they’d be moved further into Europe or the UK.
Another guy, a banker, was allegedly handling the money for Zada’s operations. It’s all pretty interconnected, and the authorities are keen to break this network apart.
Cooper mentioned that just a few weeks ago, the UK signed a deal with Iraq to boost cooperation on law enforcement and border security. They’re really trying to tackle these smuggling gangs head-on.
The NCA is making it clear that these smugglers can no longer operate with impunity. They’re working closely with local authorities to hold them accountable.
It’s a serious issue, especially since many lives are at risk. The smugglers often mislead people into thinking their journeys are safe, which is far from the truth. Sadly, many have lost their lives trying to cross the Channel.
