Three little pigs take up residence at Thorngrove School near Newbury

Newbury: Three little pigs have made themselves at home at Thorngrove School. This isn’t just any ordinary move; it’s part of a cool conservation project. The school wants to teach kids how to care for animals, and what better way than with some adorable piglets?

The piglets, named Plum, Pickle, and Frazzle, are all half-sisters and are now the responsibility of the students and staff. They’re getting hands-on experience by feeding and looking after these little cuties. It’s a great way for them to learn about responsibility and animal care.

Saskia Murray, a Year 3 teacher, mentioned that the pigs have settled in really well. At first, the kids were a bit nervous, but they’ve really stepped up. It’s been amazing to see a different side of them come out.

The piglets were born last September, and the school started caring for them in November after setting up their pen. Once the pigs are old enough, the school plans to breed them to help grow the rare Berkshire breed.

Not only is this project educational, but it’s also been great for the kids’ wellbeing. For some students who might be feeling anxious or having a tough time, spending time with the pigs has been a real comfort.

They even held a naming competition for the piglets and raised £375 for a local charity that helps disabled children. It’s heartwarming to see how Thorngrove School is blending education with compassion, especially since it used to be a pig farm before becoming a school.
