Worcestershire: So, it turns out that drones are causing quite a stir at HMP Long Lartin. They’ve been dropping drugs and weapons right into the prison yard. Can you believe it? Inspectors are saying this is a real threat to national security.

Charlie Taylor, the Chief Inspector of Prisons, pointed out that these drones are bringing in illegal stuff to jails that house some of the most dangerous criminals. Inspections last fall showed that security measures like CCTV and protective netting were in pretty bad shape.

Both HMP Long Lartin and HMP Manchester have become hotspots for drugs and weapons. At Manchester, prisoners were even burning holes in windows to keep those drone deliveries coming. It’s wild how these drones are getting bolder with their payloads.

And get this: 39% of prisoners at Manchester tested positive for drugs. At Long Lartin, half of the inmates said it was easy to score drugs and alcohol. This has led to a spike in violence and self-harm, all tied to the drug debts piling up.

Since the last inspection, there have been six self-inflicted deaths at Manchester, making it one of the most violent prisons around. The conditions are just awful, with dirt, dampness, and even a rodent problem. Can you imagine living like that?

Charlie Taylor didn’t hold back, saying it’s alarming that organized crime has basically taken over the airspace above these high-security prisons. He stressed that the safety of everyone involved is at risk because of this ongoing issue.

Campbell Robb, the CEO of Nacro, echoed these concerns. He mentioned that the reports show a cycle of boredom, drug use, and violence. He believes that addressing the conditions in prisons is just as important as stopping the drugs from getting in.

Robb emphasized that providing work and education can help give inmates a sense of purpose, which might keep them from turning to drugs. It’s all about rehabilitation, and if we don’t tackle this, we might see more people leaving prison with addiction issues.
