Overcrowded and Underpopulated Schools in JCPS for 2024
A recent analysis reveals the most overcrowded and underpopulated schools in Jefferson County Public Schools for the 2024 school year
Louisville, Kentucky, JCPS, Overcrowded Schools, Underpopulated Schools
Louisville: So, it turns out that about three dozen schools in Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) are pretty overcrowded this year. A recent analysis showed that while some schools are bursting at the seams, others are barely filling their classrooms.
The data came from open records requests and highlighted a drop in enrollment at several schools, especially the magnet ones. It’s kind of surprising because JCPS officials thought they had a handle on things back in January.
Most of the overcrowded schools are elementary ones, but there are a few middle and high schools in the mix too. On the flip side, some of the least populated schools are magnet schools like Western High and Coleridge-Taylor Montessori Elementary.
One big reason for the drop in enrollment seems to be the loss of bus transportation this year. For example, Foster Transitional lost around 250 students over two years, leaving it with just 330 students, which is only 58% of its capacity.
Now, let’s take a look at the top three overcrowded and underpopulated schools based on the latest data.
First up is Slaughter Elementary, located at 3805 Fern Valley Road. This school has been experiencing a surge in enrollment, now at 467 students, which is 124% of its capacity. It’s been a busy couple of years for them!
Next is Stuart Academy at 4603 Valley Station Road. This middle school has also seen a jump in students, now serving 1,166 kids, which is 119% of what it can handle. That’s a lot of kids in one place!
Lastly, we have Ramsey Middle School at 6409 Gellhaus Lane. This school was designed to be eco-friendly and is currently at 118% capacity. It’s impressive how they’ve managed to keep things green while accommodating so many students.
On the other hand, some schools are really struggling with low enrollment. Whitney M. Young Elementary, for instance, is only using 21% of its new building after a significant drop in students. It’s a magnet school in west Louisville, and it’s sad to see it so empty.
Breckenridge Metro is another school facing challenges, with just 25% of its capacity filled. It’s tough for these schools, especially when they have so much potential.
Western High, which became a full magnet school this year, is also underpopulated at just 29% capacity. It’s a shame because it was one of the first schools in JCPS to have air conditioning!
It’s clear that JCPS has some work to do to balance things out. Hopefully, they can find solutions to help both overcrowded and underpopulated schools thrive.
