Welsh Locations Identified as UK Drink-Driving Hotspots
Recent data reveals Llandudno as the second worst drink-driving hotspot in the UK

Llandudno: A new report has come out showing that Llandudno is the second worst place in the UK for drink-driving convictions. It’s based on findings from the Freedom of Information Act, which looked at where drivers are most often caught over the limit.
The latest data from 2023, shared by the DVLA, puts Llandudno right behind Northampton, which tops the list. Newport also made the cut, showing that drink-driving is a real issue in these areas.
The RAC has pointed out that many drivers think stricter penalties could help tackle this problem. They found that 38% of drivers believe tougher sentences are the way to go, especially since drink-driving was linked to around 300 deaths last year.
So, what are the top ten hotspots? Here’s the rundown: Northampton leads with 13.4 convictions per 10,000 drivers, followed closely by Llandudno at 13.1. Other cities like Nottingham and Sunderland also feature in the top five.
Rod Dennis from the RAC mentioned that it’s clear people want change. The stats show we’re seeing drink-driving fatalities similar to those from the late 1980s, which is pretty alarming. Plus, many offenders are repeat offenders.
Drivers are also in favor of measures like alcolocks, which prevent someone over the limit from starting their car. It’s all about keeping those who have been caught from doing it again. And enforcement is crucial; people need to know they could get caught if they decide to drink and drive.
In a recent RAC survey, drivers were asked what they think would work best to reduce drink-driving. Lowering the legal blood-alcohol limit to zero was the second most popular choice, with 34% support. A third of drivers also want police to have the power to disqualify drink-drivers on the spot, rather than waiting for a court date.
It’s a serious issue, and it looks like there’s a strong push for change. If you want to stay updated, you can join our WhatsApp news community for the latest breaking news.
