Manchester: Asda has been named the cheapest supermarket in the UK for five weeks straight. It has outperformed Aldi and Lidl, which are known for their low prices.

A recent report compared prices for essential items like bread, milk, and chicken. Asda’s total came to £12.58, just below Aldi’s £12.65 and Lidl’s £12.77.

Even though the price difference is small, every penny matters for shoppers. Food prices are a big concern in 2025, making this news important.

Asda’s success is surprising since it recently ended its price match scheme with Aldi and Lidl. Instead, it focuses on its own pricing strategy.

Despite this change, Asda continues to offer great value with its “Just Essentials” range. Aldi still claims to be the most affordable, having won Which? Cheapest Supermarket of the Year for four years.

A spokesperson for Aldi said customers save significantly every time they shop there. However, Asda’s lower prices mean the competition is still fierce.

Here’s how the supermarkets stack up for a basket of essentials:

  • Asda – £12.58
  • Aldi – £12.65
  • Lidl – £12.77
  • Morrisons – £13.03
  • Sainsbury’s – £13.13
  • Tesco – £13.34

Tesco remains the most expensive for the eighth week in a row. Morrisons and Sainsbury’s also raised prices on key items like mince and tea bags.

Aldi was the only supermarket to lower prices this week, cutting 1p off its baked beans. Asda’s focus on discounts and its Just Essentials range seems to be working well.

In 2024, Which? found Aldi was the cheapest supermarket all year. However, Asda was the cheapest for nine months when looking at a longer shopping list.

Note that the analysis didn’t include Aldi or Lidl’s smaller product ranges.
