Kooyong: So, there’s this Liberal senator, James Patterson, who’s got a plan to win back some seats from those Teal independents in the upcoming federal election. He thinks the key is just being honest about what the Teals have done.
He told NewsWire that these independents, like Monique Ryan and Zali Steggall, are way more left-leaning than they let on. Patterson claims they often vote with the Greens, which isn’t what their voters expected.
He pointed out that they’ve voted against community protection laws and even pushed for higher taxes during a cost-of-living crisis. Patterson believes if they just lay it all out there, people will see the truth.
He also wants the Teal MPs to be clear about who they’d support if there’s a hung parliament. It’s all about transparency, right?
When asked about her stance, Dr. Monique Ryan, the Teal independent from Kooyong, said she’ll be guided by her constituents and her conscience. She’s not into the whole buying and selling politicians thing, unlike Patterson.
Ryan insists she looks at every piece of legislation and collaborates with everyone to get the best results for her community. She’s not backing down from the challenge.
The Coalition is rolling out its “Teals Revealed” campaign to win back seats like Kooyong, where Ryan has a slim margin of 2.5 percent. They’re distributing pamphlets to highlight how often she votes with the Greens.
But Ryan calls that claim misleading, pointing out that she’s voted for fewer Greens motions compared to the Coalition and the government. As the race heats up, she’s determined to keep her campaign focused on helping her community, not playing dirty like the Liberals.
