The Slowest Part of the London Underground That Makes You Think Twice

Discover the slowest stretch of the London Underground and why you might consider walking instead

London: Every Londoner knows the Underground is usually the quickest way to get around, unless delays hit. But did you know some parts are super slow?

The Elizabeth line, while not technically Underground, zooms at about 60 miles per hour. That’s the fastest line, according to some data. But in the inner city, stations are so close that trains can’t really speed up.

Once they get going, they have to slow down again. Out in the countryside, though, the stations are spaced out, allowing trains to hit higher speeds. The Metropolitan line is the champ for average speed.

Now, the slowest part? It’s on the Central line, between Fairlop and Hainault. This stretch covers just 0.47 miles in nearly three minutes, averaging a snail-like 9.66 miles per hour.

For comparison, the average person walks at about 4 miles per hour. So, the Tube is only a bit faster than a casual stroll. Makes you wonder if running would be quicker, right?
