Paignton: A beautiful beach in the UK is famous for its pink sand. This beach is near Torquay and is known for its unusual color. Visitors say it looks more red or terracotta than pink.

The pink hue comes from iron minerals in the sand. When these minerals oxidize in the air, they create that unique color. In 2023, a study ranked Paignton Beach as the second-best pink beach worldwide.

It was only behind Camargue in Aigues Mortes, France. The study looked at Instagram tags to determine popularity. Other beaches on the list included Horseshoe Bay in Bermuda and Pink Sands in the Bahamas.

Recently, Torquay Council rejected a request to remove rocks from Paignton Beach. Some locals believe these rocks could be dangerous for tourists this summer. The council had previously approved a £14 million plan to improve the seafront.

Resident Richard Kaskow expressed concerns about the rocks. He has known the beach for over 60 years and feels it poses a risk to bathers. He explained that the rocks protect the original sea wall and can be extensive at times.

A spokesperson for Torbay Council acknowledged the rocks. They said these rocks are natural formations usually covered by sand. Recent severe weather has revealed more rocks than usual.

The council believes these rocks are important for marine life. They prefer to educate residents about the rocks rather than remove them. Caution is encouraged for those visiting the beach.
