Wigan: A flood warning is still active this morning as the area deals with the aftermath of the New Year’s heavy rain.

Some places saw up to three inches of rain in just a day, causing rivers to overflow and streets to turn into rivers, with water rushing into homes.

Emergency services had to step in, declaring a major incident. They rescued many people trapped in buildings, including the Meadow Mill apartments and the Britannia Country House Hotel.

On Wednesday, there were 55 flood warnings in place, indicating that flooding was expected, and people needed to take action. There were also 15 less serious alerts.

As of early this morning, 16 warnings were still active around Greater Manchester and Warrington, particularly for the River Bollin and River Mersey.

However, the Environment Agency has since lifted most warnings, leaving just one for the River Douglas in Wigan, which nearly hit two meters yesterday. Flooding can occur when it goes above 1.79 meters.

The EA mentioned that their response teams are on the ground, and the Wigan flood storage basin is being utilized. Areas affected include Eleanor Street, the Bus Depot, and Baker Street.

There’s also a less severe amber alert for the Upper River Douglas, covering places like Adlington and Standish.

Greater Manchester Police reported localized flooding in Wigan, and a council refuge center has been set up at Robin Park for those in need.
