Manchester: So, guess what? Eight roads in Manchester are getting their speed limits cut down to 30mph. This is part of a new plan from the council to make things safer for everyone, especially pedestrians and cyclists.
There’s been a real spike in accidents lately, and the council is stepping up to tackle it. Kevin Gillham, who’s in charge of highways, mentioned that they want main roads at 30mph and residential areas at 20mph. Sounds like a smart move, right?
They’ve already started changing some of the 40mph roads to 30mph. Work kicked off last summer, and they’ve put up new signs in some spots. There are still four roads left to adjust, but they’re on it.
Greater Manchester Police will be keeping an eye on the new limits, and there’ll be temporary signs to remind drivers about the changes for a while. It’s all about making sure everyone knows what’s up.
The eight roads getting the speed limit cut include World Way near the airport and Middleton Road by Heaton Park, among others. Some changes have already been made, so it’s happening!
Sadly, the numbers show that accidents have been on the rise since the pandemic. In 2019, 58 pedestrians were in collisions, and that number jumped to 77 in 2023. Cyclist accidents more than doubled too, which is pretty alarming.
Overall, the number of serious injuries and fatalities has gone up from 122 six years ago to 183 this year. The council is also looking at upgrading speed cameras to help with enforcement. It’s all about keeping our roads safer for everyone.
