Salford: Exciting changes are coming to how folks get around the city. There’s a big £9 million plan to improve travel options, especially for cyclists.

This spring, a £5 million project kicks off to build a new protected cycleway along Oldfield Road. It’s called the Oldfield Road Corridor, and it’s going to make a real difference.

They’re also adding a new signalized junction at Liverpool Street, which will give cyclists and pedestrians their own space. How cool is that?

Funding is coming from various sources, including about £1.1 million from developers and support from the Department for Transport through the Active Travel Fund.

There are more upgrades planned too, like at the Chapel Street and New Bailey Street junction. They want to create continuous cycle tracks and footways, making it safer for everyone.

Campaigners are really excited about these changes. They believe it’ll help ease traffic by giving people more options instead of driving everywhere.

Harry Gray from the Walk Ride GM group mentioned that this is a big deal for Salford, especially with more people moving into the area who don’t own cars.

He pointed out that with the housing crisis, it’s essential to have good infrastructure for those living in new flats.

Harry also highlighted the success of cycling infrastructure in Greater Manchester, noting that the Oxford Road cycle lane has seen record usage.

He believes that while it takes time for people to switch from driving to cycling or walking, the investment is worth it for the future.

Other exciting projects include the Salford Rise scheme, which is building a massive bridge for pedestrians and cyclists. It’s set to finish in summer 2026.

They’re also working on a new walking and cycling route along the River Irwell, making it easier to get around the city center.

Salford council and Transport for Greater Manchester have been contacted for their thoughts on these developments.
