Salford: A taxi driver, Ghulum Murtaza, shared his emotional story during an inquest about the moment he hit a man on the motorway. It was a tough experience for him, and he was clearly shaken up.
He described how Benjamin Connor suddenly appeared in front of his car on the M602. Murtaza was driving alone, and it was early in the morning. He said it all happened so fast; he tried to avoid the collision but just couldn’t react in time.
After the accident, Murtaza rushed to help Connor, who was lying on the road. He was worried that other cars might hit him again, so he stopped his car and ran over. He even tried to get other drivers to stop and help, but no one did. He called 999 right away.
Sadly, Connor later died in the hospital. Murtaza said he was traumatized and couldn’t sleep for weeks after the incident. He felt a mix of shock and panic when it happened, and he cried for hours afterward.
The inquest revealed that Connor had been walking into oncoming traffic before the accident. CCTV footage showed that he moved quickly into the path of Murtaza’s taxi. Witnesses noted that he didn’t seem drunk or staggering, but he had alcohol and cannabis in his system.
Before the collision, Connor had been in a bit of trouble with the police earlier that night. They had let him go, which his family later criticized, saying he wasn’t in a fit state to be alone. His mother expressed her heartbreak in a letter, questioning why he was released without support.
The inquest is still ongoing, and it’s clear that this incident has deeply affected everyone involved.
