Canberra: David Littleproud has been vocal about the new car rules in Australia, saying folks have been caught off guard by what he calls a new tax. The New Vehicle Efficiency Standard kicked in on January 1st, and it’s got people talking.

Under these new rules, car makers need to hit certain CO2 targets to sell their vehicles here. Littleproud argues that this will drive up car prices, making it tougher for everyday Australians to buy a new ride.

He told Sky News that starting this year, people might end up paying thousands more for a new car. He believes these standards are stricter than what’s seen in most other countries.

Littleproud pointed out that while the government thinks this will lead to more eco-friendly cars, it might actually limit choices for buyers. He emphasized that Australians need affordable options, especially in regional areas where electric vehicles might not cut it.

He also mentioned that the new rules don’t dictate how car makers should meet their CO2 goals, so they can still sell gas-guzzlers like utes. However, they’ll need to balance that with tighter emissions ratings on other vehicles.
