Mumbai: The excitement is building for the Tata Mumbai Marathon (TMM) 2025, happening on January 19. This event is always a big deal, especially for those who break records or tackle personal challenges. But let’s not forget the pacers—they’re the unsung heroes who help runners stay on track and push their limits.
Pacers are there to help runners keep a steady pace, making sure they hit their target times. They also grab water and energy drinks from aid stations, so runners can focus on the race without distractions.
Each pacer carries flags or balloons showing their time goals, which helps runners follow them through the crowd. Even though they play such a crucial role, pacers often don’t get the recognition they deserve.
This year, the TMM will have 32 pacers: 15 for the full marathon, nine for the half-marathon, and eight for the 10 km race. The 10 km race will feature an all-woman pacer lineup, highlighting gender inclusivity. Arti Agarwal and Vani Subramanian are two inspiring women among the pacers.
Arti, 42, works at JP Morgan and is a mom to a 12-year-old. She’s been pacing the full marathon for three years now. She says, “Pacing is about motivating runners when things get tough. The TMM is a celebration of resilience and togetherness.”
Vani, 36, is a tech professional at Google who found her passion for running during the pandemic. She trained with the Jayanagar Jaguars running club and even finished on the podium in her age category at the 2024 Adani Ahmedabad Half Marathon. “The TMM is a yearly tradition for me. It’s all about community and strength,” she shared.
Other notable pacers include Vijay Venugopal and Rajul Ranka for the full marathon, and Sagar Patil, Manju Narsingha, and Puja Jhunjhunwala for the half marathon. The all-woman lineup for the 10 km race features Ayesha Mansukhani, Urmila Bane, and Dr. Bhumika Gupta, among others.
