Rotherham: So, there’s this leaked report that’s causing quite a stir. It turns out senior police officers in Rotherham didn’t do enough to protect girls from grooming gangs. Why? They were too busy chasing other crime stats to meet Home Office targets.
The South Yorkshire Police focused on things like vehicle theft and burglaries instead of tackling child sexual exploitation. This was all happening back in the 2000s, and it’s pretty shocking. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) put together this report, but it never saw the light of day until now.
People are calling for a national inquiry into grooming gangs again. They want to dig deeper into what went wrong and hold those responsible accountable. Jayne Senior, a youth services manager, was a key figure in bringing attention to the issue. She’s been pushing for justice for the young girls who suffered.
When the IOPC looked into her complaint, they found that the police had dropped the ball for years. Even though the report was critical, South Yorkshire Police didn’t take any action after it was released. They just brushed it off.
Recently, the Government announced some local inquiries into grooming gangs, but Jayne thinks it’s not enough. She wants a full national inquiry to really get to the bottom of things. She believes many professionals involved have never faced any consequences for their inaction.
According to the report, some of the people who ended up in prison for grooming were already known to the police. They had been discussed in meetings as far back as 2001, but nothing was done. It’s frustrating to think that these individuals continued to harm young girls for years.
Jayne also mentioned feeling pressured not to speak out about the report’s findings. It seems like the police were more concerned about their reputation than the victims. She faced threats of being labeled a “vexatious complainant” when she tried to raise her concerns.
Georgina Halford-Hall from Whistleblowers UK said the report doesn’t go far enough in holding anyone accountable. She believes a new independent body should investigate these failures to protect whistleblowers like Jayne.
Oliver Coppard, the mayor of South Yorkshire, is also pushing for the findings to be made public. He wants to restore trust in the police, but it’s tough to do that without full transparency about what happened.
In the end, the IOPC said they couldn’t publish the report due to sensitive information. But they did acknowledge that South Yorkshire Police failed to protect vulnerable children. It’s a tough situation, and many are hoping for real change moving forward.
