First Images of Newtown’s New Sports Centre Unveiled for Community
Newtown plans a modern sports centre to replace outdated facilities, enhancing community access and inclusivity for all.

Newtown: Plans for a new community sports facility are in the works. Hughes Architects submitted these plans to Powys County Council. The project is backed by Drenewydd Active Newtown, which includes local rugby, cricket, and tennis clubs.
The proposal includes tearing down the old changing rooms at the Recreation Ground on Pool Road. In their place, a new multi-purpose sports centre will be built. This centre will feature extra changing rooms, a gym, and flexible spaces for various activities.

A spokesperson for Drenewydd Active Newtown mentioned that the current facilities are outdated. They only have communal showers and changing rooms, which limits their ability to attract diverse players. The new facility aims to be inclusive and accessible for everyone.
They want to ensure that clubs won’t need to travel far for modern facilities. The upper floor will be open to the entire community, providing a space for various activities.

A survey from April 2023 showed strong local support for the project. Residents suggested activities like Pilates, yoga, archery, and even knitting groups.
The proposed centre will have an accessible lift and an open plan for sports and social events. It will also feature movable partitions to create smaller spaces when needed.
The plans will be reviewed by Powys County Council’s Planning Committee in February. Richard Lewis, the architect, expressed excitement about this significant step for Drenewydd Active Newtown.
He noted that the new sports building will provide a much-needed modern facility for local clubs and the community.
