Sutton: A dad of two, Darren Taylor, faced a heartbreaking end just days after finally getting a flat. He had been living on the streets for months, trying to turn his life around.
His mom shared that he was making progress and was excited about his new place. Sadly, on September 28, at just 39 years old, he died from a drug overdose.
At the inquest, it was revealed that Darren had been working hard to overcome his struggles with homelessness. He often spent his days at the Phoenix Centre, trying to stay warm and connected.
Despite his mental health challenges, his family insisted he wasn’t suicidal. They believed he was on the right path, especially after getting his own flat.
Just weeks before his death, Darren spoke about his tough experiences sleeping rough. He recalled a particularly painful Christmas spent in an alley, hearing his family celebrate nearby.
After that moment, he decided he wanted to change his life. He started visiting Beehive Café, where he found warmth and support from the community.
With their help, he began to reintegrate into local life, volunteering at the church and participating in community events. He was eager to reconnect with his kids, aged six and twelve.
However, the lack of a stable home was a constant struggle for him. He felt vulnerable living on the streets, especially with his past and ongoing battles with addiction.
After his story was shared publicly, he was offered a flat in Pollards Hill, which seemed like a fresh start. But tragically, he was found dead just days later at a friend’s house.
The inquest revealed that he had high levels of various drugs in his system, including a powerful synthetic opioid. His death has left the community mourning, highlighting the ongoing challenges of addiction and homelessness.
