Mansfield: A cold case that’s been haunting the town for over 40 years has finally seen some resolution. Last month, police shot and killed a suspect linked to the murder of Debra Miller.
Debra, just 18 at the time, was found brutally murdered in her apartment back in April 1981. For years, her case remained a mystery, but that’s changed now.
Police identified James Vanest, a 68-year-old man, as the killer. He was shot during a standoff with police in Stark County. DNA evidence has now connected him to the crime.
According to Mansfield Police Chief Jason Bammann, the DNA evidence collected over the years proved beyond doubt that Vanest was responsible for Debra’s murder. It’s a relief for the community, but it doesn’t bring Debra back.
Vanest lived in the same building as Debra back in 1981 and was even questioned during the initial investigation. But he wasn’t seen as a suspect until recently.
Investigators had preserved DNA evidence from the scene for decades. They found it showed just how brutal the attack was and how hard Debra fought for her life.
In 2021, Vanest was interviewed again and admitted he had lied to police about the night of the murder. He had claimed he chased a homeless man away from her door, but that story didn’t hold up.
With modern technology, investigators linked the DNA to Vanest, leading to attempts to question him again. But he fled to West Virginia after selling his home.
When police tried to arrest him on federal gun charges, he barricaded himself in a motel and opened fire. Sadly, he was shot and killed during the exchange.
Chief Bammann expressed sadness over the case, noting that while it’s now closed, it doesn’t erase the pain Debra’s family has endured for over four decades.
