Suspect arrested after Rep. Nancy Mace claims she was assaulted

Washington, D.C.: A suspect has been arrested after Rep. Nancy Mace claimed she was assaulted. It all went down on Capitol grounds, and it’s pretty wild.

Mace took to X, saying, “I was physically accosted tonight on Capitol grounds over my fight to protect women.” She mentioned that Capitol police quickly arrested the guy. She’s really passionate about keeping women safe and won’t back down despite the threats.

According to U.S. Capitol Police, they detained someone for allegedly assaulting a lawmaker. They didn’t name Mace in their statement, but they confirmed that an incident was reported just before 6 PM in the Rayburn House Office Building.

Police said their officers and the Threat Assessment Section tracked down the suspect. He’s been identified as James McIntyre, a 33-year-old from Illinois, and he’s facing charges for assaulting a government official.

Interestingly, the Rayburn building was open to the public when this happened, and McIntyre went through security before entering. It’s a bit concerning how easily he got in.

Mace has been in the spotlight lately, especially after introducing a bill that bans transgender women from using women’s restrooms on Capitol Hill. This has drawn a lot of criticism from LGBT+ advocates, but she insists it’s all about women’s safety.

Sarah McBride, the first transgender person elected to Congress, has been a target for Mace and others who argue that her restroom use in the Capitol is akin to assault. It’s a heated debate.

Interestingly, Republicans are focusing on a group that makes up just 1.6 percent of U.S. adults, according to Pew Research. In 2022, they found that 64 percent of Americans actually support policies protecting transgender people from discrimination in jobs, housing, and public spaces.
