Lewisburg: On January 18, two seniors from Lewisburg Area High School took a big step. They submitted a grant application aimed at creating toolkits to help prevent human trafficking.

Erin DeSantis and Mariah Drexler, both 18, teamed up with local organizations, Transitions of PA and CommUnity Zone. They wrote the grant for Pennsylvania Skill Charitable Giving, especially since January is National Human Trafficking Prevention Month.

Erin shared her passion for the cause, saying, “I want to clear up the myths about human trafficking. It’s not just something that happens far away; it’s happening right here.” Mariah echoed her sentiments, emphasizing the importance of using their voices to advocate for victims.

The grant, worth $1,500, will fund 50 educational toolkits. These will be handed out at places like gas stations and restaurants along Routes 11 and 15 in nearby counties. The goal? To help business owners and staff recognize and respond to signs of trafficking.

Human trafficking is a serious issue, affecting millions worldwide. The U.S. Department of State estimates over 27.6 million people are victims of this crime.

While Erin and Mariah know their group can’t solve the problem entirely, they’re committed to raising awareness. “Even if we can help just one person, it’s worth it,” Mariah said.

Teach Against Trafficking started in 2019, and though it’s not officially a school club, the founders encouraged Erin and Mariah to keep it going after they graduated.

To apply for the grant, they needed a nonprofit partner, which is where Transitions and CommUnity Zone came in. According to their website, Pennsylvania Skill Charitable Giving aims to support community improvement initiatives.

Tracy Strosser from Transitions praised Erin and Mariah for their dedication. They’ve been actively involved in community events and have been working hard to develop their toolkit.

Cynthia Peltier, director of CommUnity Zone, is also impressed. She noted how these students are stepping up to address a pressing issue. “They’re already out there doing presentations and raising awareness,” she said.

Erin has taken on a significant role at CommUnity Zone, contributing to various initiatives and collaborations. The organization helps people interested in starting their own projects or nonprofits.

The grant will be awarded in March, and both girls have experience with grant writing. Erin works as a media coordinator, while Mariah is involved in several clubs at school.

They also plan to visit Linntown Intermediate School to teach younger students about consent and healthy relationships, emphasizing the importance of bodily autonomy.
