Strong Temperature Flip Takes Hold of Canada This Week, See Where You Land

Calgary: This week, most Canadians are heading back to work and school after the holidays, and the weather is definitely something to keep an eye on. There’s a big temperature flip happening.

If you were feeling the chill last week, get ready to warm up. But if you enjoyed some mild weather, brace yourself for a drop in temperatures.

Parts of the Prairies, Yukon, and Northwest Territories kicked off the year with some seriously cold weather, with temperatures sitting 5-10°C below normal. Just last week, northern Yukon hit nearly -50°C, marking the coldest spot in Canada this season.

Meanwhile, other areas in Canada have been enjoying warmer than usual temperatures, especially in northern Quebec, where it’s been about 20°C above normal. But that’s about to change as colder air sweeps in from the Great Lakes to southern Quebec.

Starting this week, an air mass from Alaska will bring warmer temperatures to the Prairies. Alberta will feel the warmth first, followed by Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Calgary is expected to see highs between -2°C and 4°C, which is about 7°C above normal.

Saskatchewan will still be chilly but will be 10-12°C warmer than last week. Manitoba will also warm up, but temperatures will stay below freezing.

In Ontario and southern Quebec, the colder air is here to stay for a bit. Expect overnight lows of -20°C to -30°C in central and northern Ontario, with the coldest temperatures hitting on Wednesday. This weekend will be closer to seasonal, but more cold is on the way next week.

Eastern Quebec and Atlantic Canada will mostly miss out on the cold snap, enjoying slightly above-normal temperatures. However, northern Quebec and Labrador will see some unusual warmth, with temperatures 15-20°C above normal.

As we move into the second half of January, the Arctic air is expected to shift back to western Canada, bringing a more consistent cold pattern to the Prairies. But don’t worry, milder weather is on the horizon for Ontario and Quebec, possibly arriving by the end of January.
