Bengaluru: The United Steelworkers union is not happy with Nippon Steel’s recent proposal. They think it gives too much power to the U.S. government over production cuts if the merger goes through.

The union has been against the merger with U.S. Steel and feels Nippon’s offer doesn’t really promise to keep production going in the long run. They want to see more commitment to boosting domestic production.

In their statement, they pointed out that just protecting capacity could mean letting equipment sit unused, which isn’t a good plan. They described the proposal as a desperate move that’s likely to fail.

Recently, Nippon Steel suggested giving the government the final say on any production cuts to help get President Biden’s approval for the merger. The decision is now in Biden’s hands, and he has until January 7 to make a call.

If he doesn’t act, the merger will automatically go through. Both U.S. Steel and Nippon Steel haven’t commented yet on the situation.
